Stoneybatter Dublin, Ireland

Stoneybatter — or Bóthar na gCloch, meaning ‘the road of stones’ — has been the main thoroughfare into Dublin from the west and north-west of Ireland since ancient times. These days, it’s better known as one of the city’s most characterful neighbourhoods.

Stoneybatter Neighbourhood Guide – $5.00

The basics

  • Where is it?

Stoneybatter sits on Dublin’s northside, about a 10–15 minute walk from the city centre along the quays. If you’d prefer public transport, several Dublin Bus routes (37, 39, 39a, 70) service the area directly, and the Red Line Luas stops at Smithfield, right on Stoneybatter’s doorstep. ‍
  • When to visit?

May–June offers the best chance of dry weather and longer days, making it ideal for exploring on two wheels, or on foot. If you're visiting in June, check out the Stoneybatter Festival — a three-day community celebration of art, music, Irish language, local history and culture, organised entirely by volunteers. Though Dublin's charm is year-round – just pack an extra layer in case of unpredictable weather.
  • Where to stay?
There are plenty of Airbnbs available in Dublin, perfect if you want a small taste of the Dublin lifestyle (we stayed in Phibsborough). There are also plenty of hotels in the city, suitable for a range of budgets and tastes. With Dublin so easy to get around, and everything quite close, almost anywhere you choose will put you within easy reach of the heart of the city.

It’s the mix of old and new, community and creativity, that makes Stoneybatter feel endlessly alive, and well worth a mosey.

Our curated guide showcases the very best of Stoneybatter, Smithfield and Phibsborough, ensuring you can spend less time researching and more time roaming.

Tried & tested

We are Tim and Steph, two creatives hailing from the vibrant city of Melbourne, Australia (learn more about us ). Over countless trips, we’ve built a habit of digging deeper than the typical tourist trail.

We sort through the viral TikTok venues and the overpriced tourist traps, and we collect tips from friends who have visited. We chat with chefs, baristas and shop owners and ask about their must-visit destinations and locals’ secrets — not the places on the ‘top ten’ or ‘hot’ lists, but the ones that locals return to again and again. Slowly piecing together a picture of what makes each place unique.

Then we try them all ourselves, hand-picking our favourite places to eat, shop and explore, and the experiences that capture the heart of each neighbourhood.

For the cost of a cup of coffee, you can find out where to go for the best coffee, a relaxed vibe, fabulous food or a delicious pastry.
