Pererenan Bali, Indonesia
September 2024 Edition (updated bi-annually)
Pererenan is an ideal destination if you’re looking for a more laid-back Balinese experience – and an escape from the Canggu crowds – while still having some of the island’s best restaurants, bars and surf breaks only a short mosey away.
Pererenan Neighbourhood Guide – $5.00
Snapshot
If you search Pererenan online, there’s lots of chatter about this once-hidden gem being the ‘new Canggu’, and with good reason. From quiet surf breaks and beach-front warungs, to traditional temples that sit alongside fashion boutiques, artisan coffee shops, and trendy restaurants, Pererenan offers the perfect balance of authentic Balinese culture and contemporary comforts. It’s no surprise Pererenan was voted coolest neighbourhood in Asia!
What really sets Pererenan apart is its walkable streets that are perfect for a mosey. Head down main street, Jalan Pantai Pererenan, to explore a vibrant and dynamic food scene, or wander along the many back streets and laneways to discover hidden gems and a softer (quieter) side of Bali.

The basics
- Where is it?
On the Southwest coast of Bali, Indonesia, just north of Canggu. - When to visit?
May–September has the best weather (drier and less humid). The temperature is typically 27–32 degrees with sunny days, little chance of rain and maybe even a sea breeze if you're lucky! - Where to stay?
We stayed in a suite at the very photogenic Further Hotel – they have a few premises throughout Pererenan (we stayed at their HQ above Bar Vera). There are plenty of great villas available on Airbnb (we've previously stayed in a villa at Makali Temple Village) and there are some new hotels popping up too.
Nestled between lush rice fields and dramatic black sand beach, bordered by the bustle of Canggu and the serenity of Seseh, the seaside village of Pererenan offers something for everyone.

Tried & tested
We are Tim and Steph, two creatives hailing from the vibrant city of Melbourne, Australia (learn more about us ). Over countless trips, we’ve built a habit of digging deeper than the typical tourist trail.
We sort through the viral TikTok venues and the overpriced tourist traps, and we collect tips from friends who have visited. We chat with chefs, baristas and shop owners and ask about their must-visit destinations and locals’ secrets — not the places on the ‘top ten’ or ‘hot’ lists, but the ones that locals return to again and again. Slowly piecing together a picture of what makes each place unique.
Then we try them all ourselves, hand-picking our favourite places to eat, shop and explore, and the experiences that capture the heart of each neighbourhood.
Mosey guides are such a fun adventure. You think you know somewhere, and then you’re sent off on a treasure hunt, and the treasure is always good!!
The neighbourhood places that are recommended are obviously chosen with great care and discerning taste.
For the cost of a cup of coffee, you can find out where to go for the best coffee, a relaxed vibe, fabulous food or a delicious pastry.
The guide is extremely informative and detailed. We have visited many of the hand picked spots and used the interactive map.
